Robert Edward Auctions (REA) hit it out of the park in their most recent auction held in February, with vintage sports card sales reaching unprecedented heights. The star of the show was the PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card, which commanded an impressive $75,000 price tag, establishing a new record for this particular version and showcasing the enduring allure of rare vintage sports cards among collectors.

Another standout piece at the auction was the Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 Sporting Life series. Graded as PSA GOOD 2, this card shattered its previous record for this condition, selling for an impressive $15,000. The auction garnered substantial attention from registry builders and collectors, with a special highlight being the offering of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. Among these, the #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card stole the spotlight, fetching a remarkable $19,200 – setting a new high price for a non-Hall of Famer card in this grade from the collection.

With a vast array of 2,732 items up for bidding, REA’s auction featured a diverse selection of collectibles, with several other notable sales of vintage cards and memorabilia. A 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background graded PSA VG-EX 4 sold for $21,000, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig in PSA EX-MT 6 condition fetched $18,000, and a complete set of 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball graded PSA NM-MT 8 went for $12,000, among many other impressive transactions.

President of REA, Brian Dwyer, expressed delight at the auction’s success and the enthusiastic participation from the collector community. Dwyer also gave a glimpse into the future, teasing some exciting offerings lined up for REA’s upcoming March and Spring Auctions, promising more thrills and treasures for avid collectors and enthusiasts.

This stellar performance by REA not only highlights the enduring popularity and value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also paves the way for future events that hold great promise for collectors and hobbyists alike. With the next Encore event set to kick off on March 14-24 and the Spring Catalog Auction starting on April 5, REA remains at the forefront of the sports collectibles market, continuing to provide a premier platform for collectors to indulge their passion.
